Cursing the FIG TREES in My Life

One morning I was walking and praying and began cursing a spirit of cancer. Suddenly, I heard the Lord say, “I cursed the fig tree so you would know that you have authority to curse that which takes valuable resources but produces no Kingdom fruit!”

Man’s love relationship with the FIG TREE begins:

Genesis 3:6–8 6 So when the woman saw that the tree (of knowledge) was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. (NKJV)

After the fall, “nakedness” in the Bible means “sinfulness,” and “sin” means “to miss the mark.” When their “eyes were opened” to know good and evil, suddenly our first couple realized they had sinned, and for the first time felt guilt and shame. Their physical reaction was to hide their nakedness behind fig leaves they sewed together. But the underlying spiritual component of these actions is to “sew” lies, and excuses together in their minds to hide their guilt and shame, especially from themselves.

Cursing the Serpent (NOT People)

Genesis 3:13–15 13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent DECEIVED me, and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your HEAD, And you shall bruise His heel.” (NKJV)

THE BATTLEGROUND IS THE MIND! The serpent’s first target is our thinking! The woman knew what God said, but the serpent took her most valuable resource (her mind) and manipulated it to produce deception, suspicion, and fear, rather than Godly Kingdom Fruit. Because the enemy messed with Eve’s head, her Seed would bruise his. Hallelujah!

Jesus CURSES the FIG TREE

Mark 11:11–24 11 And Jesus went into Jerusalem (“foundation of peace [shalom]) and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany (“house of affliction,” “house of dates/figs”) with the twelve.

12 Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” And His disciples heard it.

Hungry” is a trigger word to look for deeper prophetic revelation. Remember, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled (Matt. 5:6).” Jesus isn’t looking for a fig tree to satisfy His physical hunger, but to further His mission to “fulfill all righteousness (Mat. 3:15).”

15 So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 16 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple (He severed the root).

Temple” is another trigger word. Remember, Paul said, “And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God (2 Cor. 6:16).” The money changers and sellers of doves were “fig trees” (inside THIS/MY temple) taking valuable resources but producing no Kingdom fruit! Therefore, Jesus cursed this “fig tree” at the roots by cutting off the flow of merchandise.

17 Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching. 19 When evening had come, He went out of the city.

20 Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

Notice, cursing the fig tree was not directed at the limbs or the leaves, but the ROOTS—the hidden part responsible for extracting valuable life-giving resources, water, and nutrients, from the soil. As believers and disciples of Christ, the Lord likens us not to fig trees, but oaks of righteousness (Isa. 61:3) in which the spiritual water and nutrients needed to produce Kingdom Fruit is the Holy Spirit and the Word (Jer. 17:8).

The enemy, applying this same logic, curses our “roots” by doing anything he can to hinder and disrupt our ability to draw valuable Spiritual Water and nutrients from the soil in Christ and thereby stop or hinder us from producing Kingdom Fruit. Study the Parable of the Sower in Mark 4:3-20.

21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”

By His immediate response to Peter’s fig tree discovery, Jesus gave us an important clue to unlock the symbolism of the fig tree, as well as enlarge our scope and understanding of other things that can hinder us in life. But He didn’t stop there. He gave us the supernatural key to overcome them all:

22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in (of) God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. (NKJV)

Things that Hinder Me:

Did you catch it? Personalize it: Jesus connects fig trees and mountains as symbols of anything that hinders ME from achieving God’s ultimate purpose for MY life—glorifying God through BEARING FRUIT!

John 15:7–8 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

But notice, Godly Kingdom Fruit is the product not of my flesh, but of an ABIDING RELATIONSHIP (it’s called agape LOVE) between my Lord and myself!

Conclusions:

The First Adam NEEDED the FIG TREE to hide his guilt and shame.

The Second Adam CURSED the FIG TREE because we NO LONGER NEED IT!

On the cross, Jesus took all our guilt and shame into His flesh and put it to death forever

(Heb. 12:2)!

Final Questions:

1. What FIG TREES need CURSING in your life?

2. What MOUNTAINS need MOVING in your life?
